Kayaking

Island Park is a launchpad for adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned recreationist, a curious local, or a vacationer, this slice of Idaho serves up something for everyone: climbable trails, fishable waters, hammock-worthy breezes, and yes—floatable rivers.

If you’re dipping your paddle for the first time, we’ve got some gentle currents and stunning backdrops:

  • Big Springs – Crystal clear waters and an easy-going pace. This is the most popular spot for floating where wildlife can often be spotted.
  • Cliff & Wade Lakes – Hidden gems with mountain views.
  • Buffalo River Campground – Family-friendly.
  • Chester Dam (near St. Anthony) – Smooth water and scenery that goes down easy.

Each spot is a short drive from Island Park (45 mins to an hour tops).

For those with kayaking skills, these Class I–II rivers are a bit more exciting:

  • Box Canyon – Twists, turns, and trout. Need we say more?
  • Henry’s Fork (near Ashton) – A classic Idaho run.

And while options abound, our go-to? McCree’s Bridge. It’s our cabin’s unofficial launch zone—close, chill, and just a short drive away.
